ESL Show & Tell ! Free Downloads

This is a great lesson for an introductory ESL class or an end of year class - or any class, really! It works so well as you can really get to know your students better and also they can get to know you better.

However, I chose to do Show & Tell for my grade 6 class that was on the unit "How do we say it in Korean?" I thought it would be perfect as it tied in with the phrases "Can you tell me about it?" and "How do you say it in English?" , etc.

So I told my 6th graders in advanced (About two classes before, and reminded via kakao and seeing them at lunch) to prepare an item for Show & Tell. I told them to bring one item that they found special to them. I also prepared my own item.

At the start of our Show & Tell class, I showed this simple PowerPoint that went with my
Show & Tell :

 Now, as you can see I explain what a "Marmite and Chip Sandwich" is and of course, I brought some Marmite, chips and bread for them to try it for themselves -which they loved and hated lol.
I just made one sandwich per class and cut it into cubes as it's just to taste. (Tip, put Marmite on each of the bread slices).

Some students actually enjoyed it and asked for more... but a few were indeed making the funniest faces , regretting their decision to try it!

So after the tasting, I had the students come up one by one and show their item. I first asked, what is your item? and then the class and I asked "Can you tell me about it?" They tried their best to make describe their item - which is a great way for them to think of dialogue on their own. A few of them had little papers they read off of. Overall, a really cute lesson. One student brought a vase he had made in Busan, another a box she called her "treasure box" that was filled with sentimental letters and small items. There was also a student who brought her favorite pen and pencil, she said that they were special to her because her dream is to be a cartoonist in the future. It was a great lesson.

Frozen Winter Camp Plan

Dear teachers of Korea - Merry Christmas, Happy New Year and sorry that you're stuck doing winter camp! So as a New Year's gift, I thought I'd share with you my winter camp plans and ideas.

This year I am going with a Frozen theme and keeping it simple. Here's my timetable for the week:
So everyday you can see I have 'singing time' which is when we will sing the karaoke versions of 'Let it go' and 'In the summer' maybe even "Do you want to build a snowman?' - just to get the kids into it.

Next, we have reading time. I found this great book based on Ana and Elsa called "A Sister More Like Me" - It's very sweet. I managed to get a digital copy from Amazon.
You can download it somewhere for free, I've heard...via torrent. Good luck with that.
It's a beautiful book, but a tad difficult so we will go through the vocabulary (co-teacher) and then read select pages a day. It is also written in rhymes which makes it even more fun to read.

After reading time, we go through the vocabulary, my co-teacher is going to make simple PowerPoints for this, that have picture and translations. This makes us more English focused too.

On Monday we tackle our 'Plastic Cup Snow Globes'. I found many how-to-make blog posts for this one, and I love how super easy they are to make. All you need is a plastic cup, card, decorative items of your choice (and budget) and a hot glue gun to seal it all. I've decided to also take photos of my students, quickly print them on card and that way they can put themselves inside their snow globe also! I made an easy PowerPoint to show the students how to make their snow globes, you can download it free here. (It's a step by step guide).

 I hope you will be able to make cute snow globes and have fun in your class, I can't wait to make mine.

Next craft, Making snow science experiment. Now I got this from this link: Erupting Snow Recipe and will follow it, as it's super simple and looks fun. I think I'll also get cheap plastic containers/ bowls for each group to make their own snow.

 Another fun science experiment is a "unfreeze the princess" activity that I also found online.
All you have to do is put a princess toy (small) inside a container then fill with water and freeze. The next day, get your students in groups and the first team to save the princess wins.
You can also use small cups and line them with oil maybe? then its even more small and can melt faster. I'm thinking of bringing my hair dryer in and they can use it for a minute max, each group? Not sure yet...anyway, it's all about the fun.

Another craft, which we'll do on Tuesday also is a simple painting activity. I found the paint templates online and downloaded them for free. The kids just have to paint and cut out, stick on coloured paper. You could dress this activity up more, perhaps add glitter, etc... but I'm keeping it low maintenance. And we're using the paint left over from summer camp.

On Wednesday we will make simple Frozen Character Cubes. I got these lovely templates off deviant art , you can download them free here: Cube Crafts.

I think I can easily change them to back and white and have the kids colour them in before cutting and assembling. Again, keeping it simple and cheap. great to print these on card.

After that, also on Wednesday we're going to make Olaf Marshmallow treats. This is super easy.
All you need are marshmallows and some black icing... or black sting liquorice and candy corn. Use what you can. Here's a link with a few different ideas on how to make these Olaf treats: Olaf Treats Thank you!
On Thursday I'm going to attempt to make ice cream cone winter trees, they are simple as you only need ice cream cones (1 per child) and melting chocolate, preferably white to go with the Frozen/winter theme. And I am planning to have watered down blue food dye to paint the chocolate with, or mix in prior to pouring over the cone. And also I want to find blue and silver sprinkles...although multicoloured ones are fine too. I got this from Disney 

After we will make Jelly, hopefully blue and let it set overnight. The next day, Friday, I want them to spoon their jelly in cups and top with whipped cream. (and sprinkles?) While I'm on holiday I'm going to search for Frozen or any winter theme candy so we can stick that in our jelly.
This is a red one, but you see the idea (blue in the back).  Make sure you whip some sugar in your cream or buy whipping cream in the can. Very simple yummy treat.

Games and things:

So we're going to play the music number game - which is when you play music, when it stops call a number and the students need to form a group with that number of people. (Play music from Frozen!).

We'll also play the unwrapping a gift game  or "pass the parcel"- a Christmas party favorite where you wrap a small gift as many times as you want, have the students pass it around to music in a circle. When the music stop they unwrap one layer (hoping to get the gift) but in between layers you can either have nothing, or to make it more educational put in a challenge.  I want to write fun challenges like "draw Olaf on the board" or sing "let it go -the chorus" , "spell snow"... etc. You can just use newspaper.

We'll also play "Pin the nose of Olaf" which is exactly like the classic Donkey game. :)

there are so many Frozen movie quiz games on Waygook but I think I'll make my own, however not round to it yet. I will also put spelling / vocabulary questions according to our reading.

ESL Shopping! Shop til you Drop PPT and Online Shopping form! Free download!


 In my grade 5 class we're on the unit "I'm Looking for Jeans" which is all about shopping for plurals : shoes, socks, sunglasses, gloves, etc. So we have practiced the phrases "I'm looking for ______" , "How about these?" , "How much are they?" , "They're ___ _______ won" , "Oh they're cheap!" , "Oh no, they're too expensive." , etc...

 In an earlier lesson we practiced money by simply writing numbers on the board -and I got them to write out the number in English in their books. I used coloured markers to get them into the pattern and also set them homework of writing numbers.  Note: This is South Korean money !

Anyway, today was fun game and project day! I did this fun PowerPoint game which I called 'Shop Til You Drop' - after that TV show. I separated the class into two teams, Boys vs. Girls and told them they had a 100,000₩ each to hindsight I guess I could lower it to 50,000 ₩...

Anyway, so after that I told them they were to go shopping and whoever can buy the most items and save the most money is the winner. So I had to keep a list of the items sold and my co-teacher (thankfully) did the math of adding up what they spent and subtracting when a wild 'sale' card jumped on screen. 

So, the real point of the game is to practice the dialogue , I had this written on the board before the game started: 

I told one girl and one boy to do rock, paper and scissors to establish which team goes first. Boys won and so they started. A slide pops up that shows a clothing item -like so:

So the team playing has to make the sentence "I'm looking for sneakers"
The other team reads the next part of the dialogue "How about these?" then back over to the other team who asks " How much are they?"

Team 2 says " They're 30,000 won"
NEXT it's up to the playing team if they wish to spend their money or not by saying either:
"Oh they are cheap! I'll take them" OR "Oh no, they're too expensive."

 If the team chooses to take the boots I will write up the amount on the score board and note that they have bought 1 item. At the end, the team with the least money spent and the most items bought, wins.

 -so remember to note items bought as well as money spent!

Now, there's also some surprises. Some slides have SALE cards that come up only AFTER the team has chosen to purchase it. This makes it more fun and surprising. The kids got really excited when a SALE card came on screen because it means they have saved their money.

So next : Project time! 

I had about 25-15 minutes left of the lesson after starting with this game, so it was a perfect segway for our projects. I designed these myself using a combination of Microsoft word and my own illustrations.

 Before starting I demonstrated by projecting the worksheet on the board and filled it out with the class. I got a student to come up and illustrate the missing product and give it a price also. We also did the simple math together. I said that if they got all 5 parts of the worksheet correct - 5 out of 5, then I will award them with a candy next lesson and/or star.

At The Restaurant! ESL Role-Play! Free download!

For my recent after-school English club we did a fun script activity that was all about ordering food.
I printed off some menu's from Google Image search - it does not matter that the menus are advanced, as long as there are some familiar foods it's fine. It's a relaxed lesson, so don't stress on the menus or making menus - takes too long. I got a variety, about 4 different ones and printed them on A4 paper.

I got the girls into a table as if at a restaurant and gave the menus out.
I then wrote the following on the board:

Waiter: Hello, what can I get you?

Customer: I'll have the _______________, please.

Waiter: And you? What would you like?

Customer: I'll have the _____________, please. 
(Go round the table taking orders)

Waiter: And what drink would you like? 

Customer: I'll have a ________________, please.

You can see how simple and repetitive it is. And that's good, because it was supposed to be simple and fun. So I had the girls look over the menus, they asked me questions and we had a bit of pictionary explanation and then I told them we'll act out a restaurant drama and I played the waiter first. 

We acted out one by one, waiter going to new customer each time...using the board dialogue to help. Then I spun my white board marker on the table and whoever it pointed to had to play the waiter next. I joined the table and ordered along with the script too. This was a super fun and simple way to practice restaurant ordering. I'd do it with an adult class too.

After making our menu's we did the same activity and I added a couple new words to our role-play dialogue:

I added the price line because I had the girls write prices on their menus. So the person playing the waiter had to calculate the price of each person's meal. This was pretty easy as we wouldn't calculate after everyone, we calculate one by one - and everyone ordered 1 food item and 1 drink. Good bit of math for them to practice !

We had great fun! Simple lesson for your classes to practice conversation :)
